Introduction: The anisotropy of white matter microstructure manifests itself in various MRI contrasts. Transverse relaxation rates R2 vary as a function of fibre-orientation with respect to the main magnetic field B01-3, while the diffusion-weighted signal is modulated by the fibre-orientation with respect to an encoding gradient. Differences between intra-/extra-axonal relaxation parameters can be crucial for bio-physical interpretation of parameters extracted from diffusion experiments4-7. Here, we report an experimental setup which enhances the ability to investigatewhat about compartment-specific fibre-orientation dependence of R2.
