French capital's grand metro expansion

Paris is building 200km of metro lines beneath its suburban fringes to better connect outer districts, reduce cross city movements and encourage a shift away from the car. Ninety percent of the French capital's population is set to live within 2km of a rail station when the Grand Paris Express project completes at the end of the decade. Four new metro lines are being built(numbers 15 -18) and a further two routes will be extended in a scheme valued at {EUR}35Bn. Such is the pace of construction that no fewer than 20 tunnel boring machines have been working beneath the ground simultaneously to remove enough material to fill 9000 Olympic swimming pools.
