Pushing sustainable logistics forward on the capital's roads

Consolidation of freight at urban logistics hubs for delivery by electric cargo bicycle could help to tackle London's emissions challenges, reports Steve Dale. Rising demand for online shopping and same day deliveries has led to fast growth in the number of large vehicles taking to urban streets in recent years. Before the pandemic, lorries and vans accounted for around a fifth of road traffic in London contributing to worsening congestion, greenhouse gas emissions and poor air quality. One answer may be to make greater use of electric vans. However another sustainable form of freight vehicle which is starting to become a more common sight in the capital may provide a better solution: the electrically assisted cargo bicycle.
