Mr Nicholas Fertin (of the Southern Ports Authority, SPA, headquartered in West Perth) spoke about the activities of the SPA, which manages the three major ports in the southwestern corner of Australia, namely Bunbury, Esperance and Albany. Bunbury has a long association with the mineral sands industry, being the port used for export shipments of ilmenite, zircon and synrutile by lluka, Cristal and various predecessor companies (Renison, Westralian Sands, Bemax, Cable Sands). TiO2 pigment from Cristai's Kemerton/Bunbury facilities is also usually shipped out of Bunbury. Imported ilmenite (notably from Mozambique), destined for lluka's synrutile plant at Capel North, is also handled at the port of Bunbury. The port has seven berths and the maximum permissible deadweight is 80,000 tonnes. In 2016, the three SPA ports handled 36.1 million tonnes of material.
