摘要

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2018) has estimated that 19% of HIV diagnoses in the United States in 2017 were in women, and these infections were primarily transmitted through heterosexual contact. Fifty-nine percent of women diagnosed with HIV were Black, and approximately one in two Black transgender women were living with HIV, demonstrating that Black women bear a disproportionate burden of disease (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Truvada?, a single daily pill to prevent HIV as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but PrEP uptake in the United States remains low, with differences in use by race, ethnicity, and gender. Among PrEP users nationally, only 5% are women (Huang, Zhu, Smith, Harris, &c Hoover, 2018).
