Preparing Australian Nurse Practitioners to Meet Health Care Demand

The Australian health care system remains slow in realizing the potential benefit of nurse practitioner (NP) roles. National and international evidence suggests NPs provide an accessible and acceptable way in which health systems can meet the demand for health care delivery, particularly in primary and community settings. One significant barrier to the integration and growth of NP roles in Australia is the highly individualized approach to education that encourages NPs to develop a narrow and specialized skill set. In this report, we discuss whether the current approach to the educational preparation of NPs in Australia adequately addresses existing and emerging health care demand.
