Accidents in Opencast Coal Mines : A Case Study

The issue of safety has been taken very seriously by Coal industry and strivifig hard for a goal of zero accidents. The safety of workers should always be a primary consideration in coal mining. In India, around 90% of Coal production comes from opencast coal mines .Due to increasing demand for the coal, opencast coal mines were offloaded wherein overburden is being excavated by offloading agency {contractor) and coal is being excavated by departmentally or vice-versa. The offloading agencies are deploying large capacity HEMM and carrying out their operations with contract workmen. The offloading agencies liberally use contract workmen and don't consider safety as a priority issue. This paper presents various literature related to safety measures of haul roads and focuses on analysis of accidents at OCP mine 'A' during the last five years and steps taken to achieve zero accidents.
