Platinum prices hit multi-year lows in2019. Not only did the metal fallsharply relative to its own historicalprice, but it also moved to trade at arecord discount to palladium. Thedivergence between platinum andpalladium continued to become starkerduring 2019, with palladium reachingnew record high levels, while platinumprices struggled to gain traction andbreak over key resistance levels. Theplatinum:palladium ratio, which bestcaptures the price relation between thetwo metals reached a record lowmonthly average of 0.5 in December2019. Platinum was half the price ofpalladium.
