Dendrophagus crenatus (Paykull) (Silvanidae) new to Fife VC 85

An adult male of Dendrophagus crenatus (Paykull) was found under the bark of a large, fallen conifer in the Cullaloe Hills (NT1888) on 28 December 2019. The beetle was located while searching for dipteran larvae. The tree was horizontal and, while essentially decorticated, the loose bark remained in situ. Present was a typical loose-bark assemblage of woodlice (unidentified), Lithobius sp. centipedes and an Amaurobius sp. spider. A single Dromius quadrimaculatus (Linnaeus) (Carabidae) was also in the same location. The area is a Forestry Commission conifer plantation which comprises Scots pine Pinus sylvestris, Norway spruce Picea abies and European larch Larix decidua,along with a variety of scattered broadleaf trees in edges and clearings.
