Enicmus rugosus (Herbst) (Latridiidae) new to Gloucestershire and other notable saproxylic beetles from Crickley Hill Country Park

The National Trust property at Crickley Hill Country Park comprises two distinct areas. The Scrubbs (S0931161) is an area of former wood pasture with large open-grown veteran beeches plus a few veteran ash, oak and whitebeam, with patches of old hazel. Crickley Hill Wood (S0933167), in contrast, is a remnant of an ancient semi-natural woodland, of oak standards with coppiced ash, field maple and hazel. The Scrubbs is one of very few old growth beech sites in the Cotswolds. A baseline survey of saproxylic beetles was commissioned by the National Trust for the 2019 field season and resulted in the discovery of one species new to the county list - Enicmus rugosus Herbst - and another - Symbiotes latus Redtenbacher - which had not been reported in the county for over 100 years. There were also other species with Nationally Scarce status in Britain and rare in the county (Alexander, 2019). Most were found by flight interception trapping - seven traps were operated on veteran trees in The Scrubbs and two on old coppice stools in Crickley Hill Wood.
