Margarinotus marginatus (Erichson) (Histeridae) in Cornwall

A single specimen of a histerid beetle was found on the wall of PAG's house in Penryn, W. Cornwall (SW777344), 22.v.2017. It was identified as Margarinotus marginatus (Erichson) but passed to KNAA for confirmation as the species had not previously been reported from Cornwall, and Duff (2012) states that it is 'Local in E. England'. Hyman (1992) indicates 'Notable B' status, i.e. equivalent to today's 'Nationally Scarce' and therefore suspected at that time to occur in fewer than 100 hectads in Britain; he also notes that it has been recorded more widely than suggested by Duff (2012), but with South West England omitted from the 'Distribution' section. Darby (2006) notes that it is the only British histerid which is confined exclusively to mole nests. The only previous record from the South West known to us is from Braunton Burrows (K.G. Blair) in G.H. Ashe's data compilation for the Entomological Section of the Devonshire Association.
