Improved characters for separating Leiodes macropus (Rye) from L. calcarata (Erichson) (Leiodidae)

Characters for distinguishing Leiodes macropus (Rye) from L. calcarata (Erichson) were given in Cooter (1996) and copied uncritically by Duff (2012). Both authors illustrated the hind tarsi using drawings taken from Daffner (1983). Recently my friends Martin Collier and Steve Lane pointed out that the relevant key couplets and hind tarsal drawings in both Cooter (1996) and Duff (2012) are misleading, and likely to lead to misidentification of calcarata as the much rarer macropus, and vice versa. This note is intended to provide improved characters for distinguishing these two species.
