NOTES ON THE GENUS MYOTYPHLUS FAUVEL, 1883 (COLEOPTERA: STAPHYLINIDAE) IN TASMANIA

Based on a rare, large sample of Myotyphlus Fauvel, 1883 from Tasmania, Myotyphlus newtoni Solodovnikov and Jenkins Shaw 2017 is newly recorded for the island. A single female specimen undetermined to species level is reported from the Near ThreatenedMastacomys fuscus Thomas, 1882 (Rodentia: Muridae), which is reported as a host for Myotyphlus for the first time. New records for Myotyphlus jansoni (Matthews, 1878) and further instances of these beetles grasping onto their host's fur with their mandibles are also reported, corroborating the hypothesis and earlier evidence that Myotyohlus grasp onto the fur of the mammal host to gain access to its nest or burrow. Anotylus cribriceps (Fauvel, 1878) and Oxytelus collaris Erichson, 1840 (Staphylinidae:Oxytelinae) are reported in a possibly loose association with the mammals used by Myotyphlus as hosts. Presumably, these oxyteline rove beetles feed on dung or decaying plant matter in the mammal nests or burrows.
