Prostate Tuberculosis: A Rare Complication of Pulmonary Tuberculosis with Malignant Features Mimicking Prostate Cancer

Dear Editor, I read with interest the case report by Eziyi et al. published in the January-February 2020 issue of the Urological Science. The authors described nicely a case of prostate tuberculosis (PTB) in a Nigerian patient. 1 assume that the rare occurrence of TB at an unusual site mimicking cancer should alert the authors to consider defective immune status, particularly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Truly, PTB has been reported among HIV-positive individuals. Nigeria is among the Sub-Saharan countries fighting the devastating consequences of HIV infection. The available data pointed out to the substantial HIV seroprevalence rate of 3.2% in Nigeria. Interestingly, 9.1 % of patients with genitourinary TB in Nigeria were found to be HIV-positive. I presume that HIV infection ought to be taken into consideration in the case in question and contemplating the diagnostic battery of viral overload and CD4 lymphocyte count estimations would have envisaged.
