Perinatal Methamphetamine Use: A Review of the Literature

Methamphetamine is the second most commonly used illicit substance worldwide and the third most commonly abused substance in certain Western and Midwestern states, behind alcohol and cannabis. The presence of methamphetamine use in pregnancy requires that practitioners have familiarity with not only its pharmacologic effects, but also the potential risks during pregnancy or breast-feeding to both the mother and neonate. However, studies regarding methamphetamine use in the perinatal period are limited, with few comprehensive reviews available. In this article, we aim to address gaps in the literature through a review of the pharmacology of methamphetamine, its effects on perinatal patients, and the available data regarding pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options.
