Diseases caused by E. coli entail use of antibiotics in animal productionE. coli infections are a major problem in pig production. Young animals with an incompletely developed immune system are often unable to cope with the cavalcade of pathogens including E. coli which may cause diarrhoea, oedema, endotoxic shock and death.Antibiotics are commonly used in treatment programs, or prophylactically to prevent clinical disease and reduce production losses.
