Effect of season on the rooting response of Pongamia pinnata in the nursery.

Pongamia pinnata plants were grown in the first year from seeds collected from a single tree and cut back at the height of 10 cm height to allow the growing of coppice shoots and obtain the cutting material for planting. In the second year, coppice shoot cuttings were taken at 10 days interval and planted in vermiculite rooting media under mist chamber condition from July to November to observe the optimum time for collection of cutting and planting out in the nursery. Maximum sprouting percentage, number of roots, number of leaves and root-shoot length were recorded in the cuttings planted in the month of mid July to mid August. Results indicate that the mid rainy season is the best season to collect softwood cuttings from the coppice shoot of P. pinnata.
