New EAFs to alter scrap market in southeast US

With several new electric-arc furnace (EAF) mills slated to be built in the southeastern US, the market dynamics surrounding raw material sourcing in the region are set to change in the coming years. Steel Dynamics Inc.'s planned 3 million st EAF in Sinton, Texas, Big River Steel's plans for a 1.65 million st expansion in Osceola, Arkansas, and reported intent to build another EAF in Brownsville, Texas, US Steel's 1.6 million st Fairfield EAF in the works, and the latest announcement on Aug. 12 of ArcelorMittal's plan to build a 1.5 million st EAF in Calvert, Alabama, collectively mean the steel production landscape in the South could look dramatically different in several years.
