Janus Particles: a new additive for coatings

In Recently researchers at Iowa State University discovered a novel additive that can drastically improve coating properties such as water resistance and surface hardness. The additive, Janus particles, are named after the ancient Roman God since these particles have a different chemical composition on each side For example, one side may attract water while the other side may resist water, giving Janus particles amphiphilic properties like surfactant molecules. Janus particle additive is highly efficient in modifying surface properties, particularly for waterbome emulsion latex polymer coatings.
