Evaluation of cowpea genotypes for resistance to leafhopper, Empoasca kerri Pruthi.

Screening of 30 cowpea genotypes was done against leafhopper, Empoasca kerri Pruthi. Out of 30 genotypes, one genotype was resistant and seven genotypes were moderately resistant. Five genotypes showed highly susceptible reaction. Remaining 17 genotypes were categorized as susceptible. Out of these, eight genotypes viz., CS-88 as resistant, IC-202790A and EC-17574-6 as moderately resistant, EC-394838, HFC-42-1 and FS-68 as susceptible, V-240 and IC-5890 as highly susceptible were selected to study nymphal survival and development. On resistant genotypes viz., CS-88, IC-202790A and EC-17574-6 nymphal survival ranged from 57.04 to 66.66% and it had taken 7.54 to 7.87 days to complete the nymphal period on these genotypes. While on highly susceptible genotypes viz., V-240 and IC-5890 nymphal survival ranged from 85.19 to 86.67% and leafhopper had taken 5.63 to 5.97 days to become adult. Thus, nymphal survival was low and nymphal duration was longer on resistant genotypes than susceptible genotypes of cowpea.
