Evaluation of suitable feed for rearing of Indian Medaka, Oryzias melastigma (McClelland, 1839).

In the present study, Oryzias melastigma (L=14.0 mm+or-0.16, W=10.5 mg+or-0.49) was fed with two prepared feeds (flake feed and moist feed) and two live foods (mixed plankton and mosquito larvae) separately for 30 days to evaluate their growth and survival. Ten fish were stocked per tank (60x30x30 cm). For each treatment five replicates were carried out. At the end of experiment, fish from all the replicates were counted and their individual length and weight were recorded. Based on the statistical analysis (One-way ANOVA), significantly higher length gain (49.0%), weight gain (644%), specific growth rate (6.67) and survival (100%) were observed in fish fed with flake feed. Significantly lower length gain (5.38%), weight gain (96.79%), specific growth rate (2.20) and survival (64.0%) were observed in mosquito larvae fed fish. Growth and survival of fish fed on flake feed and moist feed differed significantly (P<0.05) from mixed plankton and mosquito larvae. Flake feed and moist feed resulted in almost equal performance in weight gain and survival. The present study indicated that O. melastigma could be easily reared on prepared diet under laboratory conditions.
