Affordable gas in the pipeline

India's natural gas industry is poised to receive an important boost as the government prepares to simplify the national gas pipeline transmission tariff structure to make gas more affordable and encourage investment in pipelines,city gas distribution networks and other gas industry infrastructure.The new gas pricing structure is intended to create a single gas market,according to Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan,by attracting new investment in India's growing national gas transmission and distribution grid and increasing gas availability.India's national gas transmission and distribution grid consists of a large number of transmission and city gas distribution networks and sub-networks.Built and operated by various state-run and private Indian companies,each pipeline company operates with its own set of gas transportation tariffs that are approved by India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).Until now PNGRB generally has approved tariffs that allow the pipeline investor a 12% return on the pipeline investment cost,based on an average 30-year operational life for the relevant pipeline network or sub-network.Tariffs vary widely.
