Shell pledges to accelerate transition strategy

Shell's decision to speed up its energy transition strategy in response to last month's Dutch court ruling will further embolden activist investors. The court decided that Shell must cut its worldwide net carbon emissions, including those from its suppliers and customers, by 45pc by the end of 2030 from 2019 levels. This gave activists hope that even if Shell successfully appeals, the verdict has created a precedent that will open the floodgates to similar cases against other oil firms. But there could be a bigger precedent in the making, of activist investors forcing an oil company to alter its strategy by taking it to court.
