Most European countries are pushing to allow natural gas use as part of the energy transition towards a low-carbon future. The EU is considering classifying natural gas as a green investment under certain criteria, according to the draft text of its taxonomy regulation. This is designed to establish criteria for environmentally sustainable economic activities and is expected to steer funding towards sustainable projects. The draft lists gas-fuelled plants that generate power plus heating or cooling as a sustainable activity, as long as the technology replaces high-emitting power sources, cuts emissions by at least 50pc per kWh, and is in operation by the end of 2025.
