US president Joe Biden vowed on the campaign trail to reset the US’ Middle East priorities by returning to the Iran nuclear deal, but his frst major initiative more directly afects Saudi Arabia and its military campaign in neighbouring Yemen. The US will end all support for Saudi-led military operations in Yemen, Biden said on 4 February. “We are ending our support for the war in Yemen, which has created a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe,” he said during a visit to the State Department. “This war has to end.” Biden is involving the US directly in resolving the civil war, appointing Tim Lenderking, a career diplomat with Saudi expertise, as a special envoy for Yemen.
