The grains of barley [Hordeum vulgare (L.) cv. PL-172] were soaked in aqueous solutions of calcium and potassium for 12 h. The treatment improved per cent germination of the grains and the activity of α-amylase, irrespective of the ions and their concentration. However, the best response was generated in the grains soaked in potassium (12 μM) where germination and α-amylase activity was maximum.
