摘要

With India's rapid urbanization and urban migration, establishment of smart cities has become essential for attaining sustainable urbanism in the country. Hence, the Government of India (http://smartcities. gov.in/) has created a nationwide search forresearch and policy studies to inform the newly initiated Smart City Mission. The mission's objective is not to build new cities, but to convert the existing ones into smart cities through retrofits and extensions. While smart cities in developed countries rely on mining, analysis, and digitization of data to establish urban networks, smart cities in a developing country like India aim to provide, at affordable rates, basic urban services such as water, sanitation, electricity, housing, health, and education. In addition, provisions for employment, e-governance, and efficient urban mobility also form integral components of such a project.
