New guidelines for the management and treatment of hypertension, one of the leading causes of death and disability throughout the world, are scheduled to be released in 2017 by several internationally recognized organizations. In the U.S., these guidelines, jointly prepared for the first time by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (AHA), will serve as an update to the hypertension management guidelines prepared by the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8) and published in 2014. Findings from several recent clinical trials and analyses-most notably from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT)3-are expected to form the basis of these new guidelines, which should feature new hypertension treatment targets and new approaches to the treatment of the elderly, among other recommendations.
