One way to reduce the incidence of tank bottom leaks is to construct or re-construct tanks with a stainless steel bottom.Whether it is a replacement or a new construction,duplex stainless steels,especially the lean grades,offer advantages in properties,performance and cost.Several aspects of the material's properties(and presence in the marketplace)will need to be evaluated to ensure proper material selection: corrosion properties,mechanical properties,applicable construction codes,availability,fabricability,inspection requirements and future maintenance requirements.As a final consideration cost,(both investment and lifecycle),must be considered.There are three components of tank corrosion that must be considered: internal corrosion by the stored fluids,external corrosion caused by local atmospheric conditions and soil corrosion where direct contact with the floor is possible.
