Planning the ahead key to weaning

Weaning may be a way off, but it will pay off to plan early to maintain lamb health and minimise potential growth checks, says Csaba Adamik of Lallemand Animal Health.He believes it is particularly important to ensure a good dietary transition when weaning lambs onto a creep-fed system. Mr Adamik says: "If the lamb's rumen isn't prepared for an increase in concentrate feed intake at this time, rumen microbiota can beaffected and this not only has health implications but can also cause lead to a fall in growth rate."For lambs to grow and minimise any post weaning dip in performance, it is important to encourage rumen development so they can utilise their new diet."
