The UK livestock sector has successfully reduced antibiotic use in recent years, but it is important to remember that every time an antibiotic is used, even responsibly, the chance of bacteria developing resistance to it is increased.The accepted approach to medicine use on farm is'as little as possible, as much as necessary'. This will optimise the balance between the immediate health and welfare of animals, and the future need to keep antibiotics available as a tool for both animals and people.
