REACTION OF BOTTLE GOURD VARIETIES TO TWO ISOLATES OFBOTTLE GOURD MOSAIC

Nineteen cultivars of Lagenaria siceraria Standl, received from I.A.R.I., New Delhi and D.A.R.L., Pithoragarh were separately tested against mild and severe isolates of bottle gourd mosaic to note their varietal reaction. The diseases were cultured onLocal-1 cultivar of bottle gourd, which was found to be highly susceptible to both the isolates. The inoculated seedlings were kept under observation up to 30 days after inoculation. Symptoms were recorded from first appearance (7-10 days after inoculation) to 30th day. The plants that did not show symptoms were tested through back inoculation on cultivar Local-1 to confirm whether the plants were symptomless carriers or immune. Based on the type and severity of symptoms, the cultivars were categorizedas highly susceptible, susceptible, moderately resistant and resistant. Out of nineteen cultivars tested, NDBG-4 and NDBG-58 were highly resistant to mild isolate, Cultivars Kalyanpur long, Kalyanpur 7110 and Kanpur 6203 were susceptible to mild and severe isolates. Cultivars Dhanbad Dwr-1, Gy-5, Gyn-1, Local-2 and PsPl-Long were highly susceptible to mild isolate, while Kalyanpur Long, Local-1, Local-2 and PsPl-Long were highly susceptible to severe isolate. None of the cultivars was proved to be immune neither to mild nor to severe isolates of bottle gourd mosaic.
