Study on Papain in Papaya Ring Spot Affected Papaya

Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV) disease has threatened papaya cultivation in the world. It causes upto 100% loss in severe conditions. The papain content depends on size and healthy condition of fruit. Plants infected with PRSV produced smaller fruits (11.667 cm length x 26.514 cm girth) and yielded less (0.670 g/fruit) papain as compared to bigger (Plate 45) fruits (13.827 cm length and 28.6 cm girth) and more papain (0.948 g/fruit) in healthy plants. The decrease in papain content in diseased fruitswas 29.324%.
