An experiment was conducted with rice cv. Amruth in Mugad, Karnataka, India, during the wet seasons of 2000 and 2001 to test the performance of various methods of sowing with different agronomic practices in comparison with transplanting under rainfed lowland condition. The treatments comprised: farmers' practice of transplanting (T1); transplanting in lines, herbicide application at 4-6 days after transplanting (DAT), NPK as recommended at 100:50:50 kg/ha (N applied in 3 splits of 50, 25 and 25% as basal, at tillering and panicle initiation) (T2); farmers' practice of broadcasting of sprouted seeds (120 kg/ha seed rate and 100 kg DAP/ha) (T3); broadcasting of sprouted seeds at 100 kg/ha+herbicide and fertilizer application as in T2 (T4); transplanting in lines by a transplanter, herbicide application at 6 days after rice emergence followed by one spot weeding at maximum tillering, recommended NPK dose+Zn (applying only 1/3 N, all P, 75% K and all Zn as basal, followed by 1/3 N at tillering and 1/3 N+25% K at panicle initiation) (T5); sowing with 8-row DRR (Directorate of Rice Research) drum seeder+herbicide and fertilizer application as in T5 (T6); T6 and N management through leaf colour chart and all P and K as basal (T7). T6 recorded on par yield with T1 (2939 and 3070 kg/ha, respectively). With T6, the cost of cultivation was decreased by 36% and the profit was increased by 15% when compared with T1.
