Metals markets take a cue from record prices as green premiums appear

Aluminum and steel markets are seeing producers offer premiums for lower-emissions materials and to offset higher carbon costs, supported by high metals demand and prices, along with stronger European carbon prices. Aluminum producers, including Rio Tinto and Rusal, have already achieved small premiums into some contracts for low-emissions certified primary aluminum P1020 and products. Deals were mainly in Europe and North America, with interest reported in Asia. Steel companies such as ArcelorMittal, Salzgitter and Tata Steel are testing the European market for green premiums with new supplies.
