Introduction

The larynx is a highly complex organ involved with breathing, phonation, and swallowing. Its unique architecture and intricate mechanics involve numerous cartilages, tendons, muscles, nerves, mucosal folds, and joints, packed together in a tight compartment. Contrary to its modest proportions, the larynx provides us with a variety of pathologies and surgical challenges. Advances in instrumentation, lasers, optics, robotics, as well as general anesthesia and ventilation techniques, continue to expand our capabilities to operate on laryngeal lesions with endoscopic approaches, and to perform in office procedures in the awake patient.
