Emissions cap gets a deadline

Oilsands companies now have a time frame for when they'll use up the small bit of leeway built into Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan. According to the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI), producers can expect to hit the 100-megatonne emissions ceiling in 2026 if nothing changes that dramatically lowers their emissions intensity. The CERI report released in February, Canadian Oil Sands Supply Costs and Development Projects (2016-2036), estimates the current on-site CO2e emissions in the oil-sands of 70 megatonnes/year will grow to 99 megatonnes by 2026 and hit 103 megatonnes the next year if technologies are not improved.
