摘要

FRANKLINITE was named by Pierre Berthier (1782-1861), a chemist and mineralogist at Ecole des Mines, Paris, France, in 1819. Berthier (1819) stated, "I propose to [name the new mineral] Franklinite, derived from Franklin, in order to remind us that it was found, for the first time, in a place to which the Americans have gave [sic] the name of a great man, whose memory is venerated equally in Europe as in the new world by all the friends of science and humanity" (Berthier 1820, p. 323; translated by Benjamin Silliman).
