Michigan utility Consumers Energy said it will phase out coal-fired power by 2025 and will purchase existing natural gas powerplants to provide reliable energy during the transition. The proposal is part of a 20-year plan from the subsidiary of Jackson-based CMSEnergy that requires regulatory approval. It would cut short the life expectancy of the coal capacity by 15 years. The overall plan is expectedto save customers $650 million through 2040.
