Vedanta's Gamsberg project is expected to begin stage one production in the September Quarter of 2018. The project was previously held by Anglo American who looked to develop the project in the early 2000s, however Vedanta then acquired BMM and subsequently Gamsberg. After completing feasibility studies on Gamsberg, Vedanta announced that the Gamsberg project would be developed on a modular basis allowing upfront capex to be lowered. This will see the project initially start in 2018, before ramping up to capacity in 9–12 months to produce approximately 250ktpa of zinc in concentrate. Beyond this, the project will be further developed to see an additional 4Mt of open-cut production and 4Mt of underground production, producing over 600ktpa of zinc in concentrate. Capex for these additional stages is estimated to exceed US$400m.
