Zinc Use in Automobiles Driving Zinc Demand

Refined zinc imports into China were marginally lower in August, declining 4% month on month to 65.6kt. Overthe first eight months of the year, imports totalled 314kt, 6% lower than the comparable period in 2016. Thedecline in imports over August was driven by three factors; high metal prices, environmental inspections, andincreasing domestic refined production. Much of the environmental inspections have been focusing on theJiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, major areas for diecasting and galvanising. The environmental inspectionslimited cold rolled steel output in August to 3.07Mt, 4.2% lower than July 2017 and 3.2% lower than a year prior.
