Profound thrombocytopenia in patient with ITP treated with chemotherapy for breast cancer and subsequent remission after romiplostim

Although immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a common hematologic disorder, there is little published experience regarding the use of conventional chemotherapy for solid malignancies in this patient group.Here we report a 55-year-old female who was diagnosed with ITP after she was noted to have a platelet count of 20 x 10~9/L in 2004. She had a suboptimal response to steroid therapy prompting a bone marrow biopsy which showed trilineage hematopoiesis. She received two courses of ritux-imab in April 2005 and April 2007, with platelet responses after each course to 127 and 85x10~9/L, lasting 22 and 8 months, respectively.
