Effect of trifluralin herbicide applied as an incorporated or surface treatment on plant population, crop vigour, broad-leaved weed control and yield in winter linseed (Linum usitatissimum)

There are few options for autumn broad-leaved weed control in winter linseed. Trifluralin, which is approved for use in spring linseed, is one of a limited number of herbicides which can be legally applied to the winter sown crop in the UK. When used as a spring treatment in linseed, trifluralin is incorporated prior to drilling to minimise its decomposition by ultra violet radiation (i). However, trifluralin is also used as a surface applied treatment in combination with other herbicides, in winter sown cereals. The requirement to incorporate herbicide is unpopular with growers due to its increased cost. A trial was undertaken to compare the effect of application method and trifluralin dose rate for autumn treatment in winter linseed.
