Potato cyst nematodes (PCN) cause substantial yield losses every year and, increasingly, growers are faced with the problem of controlling Globodera pallida rather than G. rostochiensis. This has led to the use of two types of nematicide with very different modes of action - fumigants and granular oximecarbamates. Two of the most effective controls currently available are 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and oxamyl. Of these, 1,3-D kills PCN within the dormant cysts and oxamyl affects the hatched juveniles. The effects of these two nematicides, both singly and in combination, on the yield of potatoes and the reproduction of G. pallida were assessed in a field trial in Lincolnshire.
