A study was carried out to analyse changes in rape lines induced by infection with a UK isolate of S. sclerotiorum and disease resistance to the pathogen. The changes in glucosinolate at various times after inoculation, lesion sizes and host reactions were also studied. Of the European lines tested, cultivar Bienvenu showed good resistance to S. sclerotiorum, whereas cultivar Capricorn was the most susceptible, followed by cultivar Cobra. Two of the Chinese varieties of rape tested showed moderatedisease resistance (cultivars 014 and 020) which were less resistant than cultivar Bienvenu, and lines 016 and 024 were very susceptible. Systemic and local induction of glucosinolate in line 014 was good, whereas line 020 did not show any increase in glucosinolates after inoculation. It is suggested that in line 014 glucosinolate induction may be involved in disease resistance, whereas in line 020 other factors may be involved. It is concluded that the poor local and systemic induction of glucosinolates in lines 016 and 024, and subsequent susceptibility, implies that glucosinolate induction may be an important marker of resistance to S. sclerotiorum in rape.
