Ninth Circuit Issues Two Decisions Regarding Uranium Mining Near Grand Canyon On December 12, 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued two decisions related to uranium extraction in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon, holding that, while the 2012 withdrawal of roughly one million acres of federal land from location of mining claims was legal, the only commercial mining operation in the area had established valid existing rights to its claims in the withdrawn lands.
