INTERPRETATION OF PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE RESPONSE

We continue to enjoy the discussions that accompany case reports; however, we are concerned with the interpretations drawn by Cohn et al.! Briefly, the authors describe a 71-year-old woman with emphysema and recurrent upper and lower respiratory tract infections. The reported immune workup consisted of normal serum immunoglobulin levels and pre-vaccination and postvaccination titers after the patient's third pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (PPV); however, no other pertinent results, such as protein vaccine responses, flow cytometry measures, T-cell proliferation, complement levels, and immunoglobulin subclasses, were provided.
