Your Doctor has been thinking about what it is to be a mathematician. And what mathematicians can bring to the party. It is not like being another type of scientist, is it? Indeed, unlike say physics, in maths the observations are largely non-existent, or else are irrelevant to the task in hand. Without the uncertainty around observations that allows for a measure of interpretation and subjective opinion, we have to deal with mathematical reality, which is a hard and sometimes cruel lover.
