Mirabelles are small, round, yellow European plums, classified as either Primus domestica or P. instinct, chiefly grown in northeastern France and adjacent regions of Europe. They are used for making preserves, tarts, and eau-de-vie. They can also beenjoyed fresh - as Edward Bunyard wrote in his pomological classic, The Anatomy of Dessert (1929), "a fruit or two fallen on the grass from sheer repletion of sweetness will not be out of harmony with that reflective stroll round the garden, for which the interval between tea and dinner seems so happily to have been designed."
