Paramoeba perurans is an amoeba species causing amoebic gili disease (AGD) in fish. It is a serious parasite of salmon aquaculture, first emerging as a disease agent in Tasmania in the 1980s, but now established in northern Europe with reports of problems in other salmon producing regions.Little is known about P. perurans outwith the aquaculture environment, but it is considered an ubiquitous organism able to survive free-living as well as having a parasitic mode on fish.
